Job departures are a part of life, especially in game development. After all, people are always in search of better opportunities and growth, which usually leads to greener pastures. That appears to be the case at Ubisoft as one of the Assassin’s Creed franchise’s most important people is departing. Narrative Director Darby McDevitt is leaving Ubisoft after more than a decade of service, with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla being his latest work.
In a tweet, McDevitt expressed appreciation for all the developers who helped create wonderful stories and characters for the Assassin’s Creed series. However, it is now time for a new adventure.
What that new adventure will entail is anyone’s guess. We do know that McDevitt has plenty of experience in music, filmmaking, and writing. It will not be a surprise if he ends up in a role that makes full use of his impressive skill in those areas.
A new position within the games industry might not be where we find Darby McDevitt next.
Today is my last day at Ubisoft Montreal!
After a decade of working with brilliant people, creating stories & characters for an incredible series, & interacting with our wonderful fans, I have decided to set forth on a new adventure…

A historic run
McDevitt started working on the long-running Assassin’s Creed series even before he joined Ubisoft. As part of Foundation 9 Entertainment, he helped write the likes of Bloodlines and Discovery. After that, he made the move over to Ubisoft, and was lead writer on both Revelations and Black Flag.
His impact on the series continued all the way through to the more recent offerings that have turned more into action-RPG affairs. Needless to say, fans of the more modern Assassin’s Creed games have plenty of reasons to thank him.
The same goes for the franchise itself. Fittingly, the official Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed account also tweeted out a goodbye and thank you video that featured many of Darby McDevitt’s works.
Unlike the more recent departures, McDevitt will be missed by all for his hard work and contributions. Here is wishing McDevitt all the best in his next venture.
